From my experience, the easiest way is to open the Messenger app. If they have an active story, it'll be there for sure!
Just go to their profile and look for their profile picture. If there's a ring around it, click it to see their stories!
Honestly, Facebook's search function isn't great for this. Your best bet is to just browse manually.
