Use the Unofficial Patch. It’s essential for a stable game on modern systems. Also, try running the game as an admin and in compatibility mode.
My personal experience: I had to run it in compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 2) and disable Steam overlay. Worked like a charm!
Disable antivirus and firewall temporarily. Sometimes they mess with the game’s files. Just remember to turn them back on!
Honestly, just buy the game on GOG. Steam version is a nightmare to fix.
