Getting a pet squirrel in Terraria is easier than convincing a real squirrel to sit still! All you need is to find or buy a Squirrel Hook from the Zoologist NPC after you've filled out 10% of your Bestiary. The Squirrel Hook acts as your pet summon item, so keep it in your inventory and use it to summon your bushy-tailed buddy whenever you want some company on your adventures.
Honestly, why stop at a squirrel? Terraria's got a whole pet shop's worth of critters you can summon. But yeah, for the squirrel, Zoologist and 10% Bestiary is your go-to.
