I managed to get a villager to leave by fencing their house in so they couldn't interact with anyone. Took a few days, but they got the hint and decided to jet. Not the nicest method, but effective.
The surefire way to get a villager to hit the road is by ignoring them completely. Seems harsh, but it works. Don't talk to them, don't complete tasks for them, and essentially pretend they're invisible. You could also try talking to them excessively until they get fed up. If patience isn't your virtue, time travel (by changing your Switch's date) might speed up the process, but beware of the consequences like weeds and unhappy other villagers!
Complaining to Isabelle doesn鈥檛 actually make villagers leave, but it feels therapeutic. To truly evict a villager, you've gotta use the cold shoulder strategy or the overcommunication method. Patience and a bit of manipulation are key.
