To get Ash Wood in Terraria, you gotta head to the Underworld biome. It's pretty much the hellish layer at the bottom of the world. Once you're there, look for trees that have a darker, almost burnt appearance compared to regular trees. Those are Ash Wood trees. Chop 'em down like any other tree in the game to collect Ash Wood. Just be careful, the Underworld's not exactly a walk in the park, what with all the lava and tough monsters around.

Honestly, Ash Wood isn't even worth the hassle. Stick to the regular wood and focus on upgrading other stuff.
