You can recover old messages by downloading your data from Instagram. Go to Settings > Security > Download Data. Instagram will email you a file with all your data, including messages!
Not gonna lie, if they’re gone, they might be gone for good. Start fresh with new memories!
I've done this before – Just contact Instagram support if you can't find it any other way. They can sometimes help you recover messages.
