You might not be able to get back to the Ruins after you leave it. Once you step out, the path closes up! So make sure you explore thoroughly before moving to the next area.

From personal experience, I can tell you that you can't return to the Ruins at all once you've moved on. Trust me, I tried. Make sure to do everything there before progressing!
