Honestly, just buy the best eggs you can afford from the shop. Don't overthink it.
Compete in as many battles as you can and complete daily quests. They give you the Gems you need to get those awesome pet eggs from the shop.
From personal experience, the more you grind, the better the pets you'll get. Spend gems on the highest-tier eggs, and you'll eventually score some good ones!
