Got Greninja after beating the Adventure Mode boss. Took me a bit, but the wait was worth it!
Start up Classic Mode and keep playing through different character paths. Greninja is one of the characters you'll eventually unlock this way.
Just keep playing Classic Mode with different characters. Greninja's unlock match will pop up eventually.
