To snag Maxson's Battlecoat, you gotta be a bit ruthless. First, you need to take down Elder Maxson himself. This can happen during the quest 'Airship Down' if you're siding with the Institute, or 'Precipice of War' if you're with the Railroad. Alternatively, if you decide to freelance and just want the coat without the baggage, you can initiate combat with him directly on the Prydwen. Just remember, this choice comes with consequences, so pick your battles wisely.
No need to go hostile, just pickpocket the coat. Requires high stealth and pickpocket skills tho. Good luck!
