Most characters can be unlocked by simply playing through the game's different modes. Play the classic mode, adventure mode, or just keep battling it out to unlock them over time!
Some characters are only available through downloadable content (DLC). You'll need to purchase these from the Nintendo eShop if you want 'em.
In some versions, you can use amiibo figures to unlock characters. Just tap them on your console and voila!
