On the Wii U and 3DS versions, unfortunately, there's no built-in multiplayer mode. Your best bet is to pass the controller back and forth with a friend and take turns playing each other's levels.

In Super Mario Maker 2 on Nintendo Switch, you can play multiplayer by selecting 'Course World' from the main menu, then choosing 'Network Play'. From there, you can join or create a multiplayer match with friends or random players. Just make sure your Switch is connected to the internet!

Only Super Mario Maker 2 has real multiplayer. Grab a Switch or stick to solo play!

I've spent hours playing multiplayer on Super Mario Maker 2! Just hop on 'Course World', pick 'Network Play', and you're good to go. Can't do that on the Wii U version though.
