From my experience, the quickest way to get new characters is to breeze through Classic Mode with each character. I unlocked most of them in a few days this way!
Honestly, just keep playing. The more you play, the more characters you'll unlock. No special tricks needed!
You can also unlock new characters in Super Smash Bros by purchasing DLC packs from the Nintendo eShop. Adds some spicy new fighters to your roster!
In Super Smash Bros Ultimate, you can unlock new characters by playing through the World of Light adventure mode, completing Classic Mode with different characters, or just by battling it out in Versus Mode until a challenger approaches. Happy smashing!
