You can't just float around like a space rock! In Starfield, you can't get out of your ship while you're in space. You'll need to land it first on a planet or dock at a space station to disembark.
Take it from someone who's tried... you can press every button in the cockpit, but you ain't stepping out until you're docked or landed. Trust me, I tried to go for a space waltz!
