From my own experience, the perks of playing a lot include earning Cash and swapping out sub abilities. Plus, you can always turn to Murch for assistance.
Focus on buying gear with the main ability you want and then use chunks to get desired sub abilities. Play lots of matches, and keep an eye out for Splatfests!
