How to Get Primary and General Messages on Instagram
On Instagram, go to your Direct Messages. To manage messages, tap the 'Primary' or 'General' tab. You can move conversations between these tabs by selecting the message, tapping the three dots in the top right, and choosing 'Move to Primary' or 'Move to General.' Simple as pie!

You don't need to do anything special to access primary and general messages. Just go to your DMs and they're both there.
Speaking from experience, it took me ages to realize that you can organize your messages this way! Just open your inbox, and the option is right there at the top.
