From my experience, you need to dock at a major spaceport. Find the ship technician, then choose the customization option. You can add lots of stuff, including a research station.
Honestly, if you haven鈥檛 figured out how to customize your ship yet, no amount of research stations will save you. Find a ship technician, fix it!
Look for the 'Ship Builder' option at any spaceshipport. Talking to the ship technician there will get you on the right track!
