If you're trying to create a solo adventure without any companions, including Dogmeat, simply go to a settlement, interact with him, and send him there. You can then roam the wastelands of Boston all by your lonesome. Trust me, he won't take it personally!
Just dismiss him to a settlement. Easy peasy, and no dogs get hurt in the process!
