Honestly, pylons are cool, but have you tried just using teleporters? Sure, you need the Mechanic and some wires, but it's way more fun zipping across the map.
Pro tip: Merchant + Tax Collector in the Snow biome = Snow Pylon. They love the cold and they'll sell you the pylon. Remember, happy NPCs = pylons for sale. Make sure their houses are spacious and not too close to others they don't like.
