I've found that raiding camps and outposts is a surefire way to get plenty of wood. Just make sure to deal with any zombies lurking about!
Trade with enclaves. It's not that hard, and you can get other resources too.
From my own experience, clearing out lumber yards always yields a hefty haul of wood. Just be prepared for a fight!
