Done it myself! Once your item is maxed out, talk to Hok or Zuud, and get ready to shell out some resources and standing. But it's totally worth it!
To gild a modular item, like a Zaw or Kitgun, visit Hok in Cetus or Rude Zuud in Fortuna. You'll need to max out the item's rank and have the necessary resources and standing with the respective syndicate. After that, you can add a special name and improve its stats!
Gilding modular items is overrated. I never bother with it.
