You might be thinking of another game. In Super Mario Maker 2, you can't grab other characters, just items and power-ups.
In Super Mario Maker 2, there's no actual way to grab people. If you mean grabbing items or objects, use the Y or X button while holding the running button. Happy creating!
I've been playing SMM2 since launch, and it's true鈥攑layers can't 'grab' each other. However, you can interact with lots of items!
