Easy peasy! Just click on your 'Friends & Chat' button in Steam, which is usually at the bottom right corner. Then, click on your username at the top of the friends list that pops up. There, you'll see a dropdown menu where you can select 'Offline' or 'Invisible.' 'Invisible' makes you appear offline to others, but you can still chat and see your friends list.

'Invisible' mode is the way to go. It's basically being a ninja on Steam - you see everything, but no one sees you.

Honestly, just set yourself to 'Invisible.' It lets you lurk in the shadows undetected. Being 'Offline' is too final, you know?
