To insert a Steam key, you gotta first launch the Steam client. Look for 'Games' at the top menu. Click on 'Activate a Product on Steam...' and follow the on-screen instructions. Just paste your key when it asks for it. Boom, you're good to go with your new game!

Tried this for the first time last week. Thought I'd mess it up, but it's actually super easy. Just open Steam, go to 'Games', select 'Activate a Product on Steam...', and type in your key. It's pretty much foolproof.
