From personal experience, make sure your USB is formatted to FAT32. Then copy your .pkg file to the root of the USB, pop it into your PS3, and find the 'Install Package Files' option under Game. Happy gaming!

Super easy! Just put the .pkg file on a USB drive, plug it into your PS3, and head over to the 'Install Package Files' option in the Game menu. Done and done!

Honestly, just download the PKG file onto a USB, connect it to your PS3, and select 'Install Package Files.' PS3 does the rest.

"Install Package Files" is key. It's almost too easy. USB -> PS3 -> Install Package Files under Game. That's it.
