When you're ready to install a module, find a workbench at a spaceport. Simply select the module you wish to install from your inventory and follow the prompts to attach it to your ship. Voila!
Tried it myself, and you basically need to collect resources first. After some looting and shooting, visit a crafting station at a space station or planet!
