Forget the hassle. Just download the update over Wi-Fi directly on your PS3. Much easier!
Make sure your USB is formatted to FAT32 first. Create a folder named 'PS3' on the USB's root, then inside it, create a folder named 'UPDATE.' Download the update from the PlayStation site and put it in the 'UPDATE' folder. Plug the USB into the PS3, then go to System Update > Update via Storage Media. Good to go!
I've done this a bunch of times! Format USB to FAT32, make 'PS3' and 'UPDATE' folders, put the update in 'UPDATE,' and use System Update on your PS3. Easy as pie!
First, download the update from the PlayStation website onto your PC. Then, make sure your USB is formatted to FAT32. Create a folder named “PS3” on the root of the USB, then inside that folder, create another one named “UPDATE.” Place the update file you downloaded into the “UPDATE” folder. Plug the USB into your PS3, go to Settings > System Update > Update via Storage Media, and follow the instructions!
