First, make sure you're in a server that supports multiplayer. Then, just hit Shift + Tab to open the Steam overlay and invite your friend from there. Easy as biting a neck!
Just join the same server and meet up in-game. No need for fancy tricks; it鈥檚 the classic way!
From personal experience, creating a private server is the way to go. You get full control, plus it's super easy to invite friends through the server admin panel!
