How to Join a Game in Terraria
Joining a game in Terraria is super simple! Just launch the game, select 'Multiplayer' from the main menu, then choose 'Join via IP' if you know the server's IP address. If you're joining a friend, you can select 'Join via Steam' if you both have the game on Steam. Make sure you've got the server password if it's required!

tbh, I always just join through Steam. It's the easiest way if you and your friends all have the game there. Never had a problem.
