How to Join Via Steam in Terraria
Joining a game in Terraria through Steam is super easy! Just fire up your Steam and make sure you and your friends have Terraria installed. Then, one of you starts a game and simply opens the Steam overlay with Shift+Tab. Right-click on your friend's name in your friends list and select 'Join Game'. Boom, you're in! Make sure you're all on the same version of Terraria to avoid any weird glitches.

Quick way: Start Terraria > Shift+Tab for Steam overlay > Right click friend > Join Game. Make sure your game versions match!
Honestly, just send your friend an invite directly through the Terraria game menu. It's easier and you avoid the Steam overlay mess.
Not sure what these other answers are about, but I always just use the in-game server list. Type your friend's IP and port number if it's not a Steam join. Works every time.
