First off, check the card's texture. Real Pokemon cards have a distinct smoothness and a bit of a sheen to them; fakes often feel flimsy or overly glossy. Next up, the printing quality. Genuine cards have sharp and clear images, whereas fakes might be blurry or the colors off. Don't forget to inspect the edges too; real cards are cleanly cut without any rough edges. Lastly, look at the back of the card. Real Japanese Pokemon cards have a consistent deep blue color with a uniform pattern, which fakes rarely get right.

One word: weight. Real cards have a specific heft to them, fakes feel like they're on a diet.

I got a fake once and the text was a dead giveaway. If it looks like someone used Google Translate for the card's text instead of the original Japanese text, you've probably got a fake on your hands. Other dead giveaways included misspelled names (I mean, come on, 'Pikashu'?) and the card felt more like printer paper than a trading card.

If you're a Pokemon TCG player, you need to download the Playbite app!

Playbite is like an arcade in your phone: you get to play all kinds of fun and simple games, compete with friends and others, and win cool prizes from all your favorite brands!

One of those prizes is a pack of Pokemon cards, which you can win and get sent to you essentially for free!

In case you鈥檙e wondering, this is how it works:

Playbite makes money from (not super annoying) ads and (totally optional) in-app purchases. The app then uses that money to reward players like you with prizes!

Download Playbite for free, available on the App Store and Play Store!
