Try visiting their profile. If it says 'Add Friend' instead of 'Friends', they gave you the digital boot.
Use Facebook's search bar. If you can't see their profile in the search results, you might be unfriended. Not fun, but it works.
I just checked my friend list regularly. If I noticed someone missing, I knew they had unfriended me. Not the best feeling, but hey!
