They're always hitting up those high-reward activities, and teamwork makes the dream work, right? Participate in events and challenges Rockstar throws out; some of them are pure gold for leveling up.

Races, my friend. Not only do you get good at evading the cops in-game, but winning races can give you a nice chunk of XP. Plus, it's fun to leave your buddies eating your dust.
Just find someone to carry you through high-level missions. Seriously, easiest XP of your life.
VIP Work. If you've got enough to register as a VIP, do it! Those missions are soloable, give good money, and decent XP. Plus, you feel like a boss doing them.
Everyone's saying do missions and heists, but don't sleep on stealing and selling cars. Easy money and a decent bump in XP, especially if you're flying solo.
