Honestly, I usually skip the wooden one and go straight for the Reinforced Fishing Rod. You need iron bars or lead bars (8 of them) and a Work Bench. It's got a higher fishing power, so why waste time with the wooden one, right?
Just use 8 wood at a Work Bench. Easy peasy.
