Honestly, the heavy work bench is kinda overrated. You can totally enjoy Terraria without it, but if you must, it's just some wood and iron or lead bars. Not a biggie.
Just grab 12 wood + 8 iron/lead bars, craft it at a Work Bench. Boom, done. Easy peasy.
