Actually, it's all about defeating a boss first. Any boss works. Once you've done that, the Dryad NPC will move in if you've got a house for her. She sells the planter boxes for 1 gold piece each. Fun fact: there are different types for different seeds, so choose wisely based on what you wanna grow.

To make a planter box in Terraria, first you gotta beat the big bad Eye of Cthulhu or any of the other bosses that come after. Once you've shown them who's boss, head over to the Dryad and buy them. They cost 1 gold each, so make sure you've saved up!
you don't MAKE planter boxes in Terraria, you BUY them. Gotta defeat a boss first tho. then Dryad will hook you up.
