How to Make a Realistic Starfield in Photoshop
SnorkellingClock·3 months agoFirst, open a new canvas and fill it with a black background. Then, use the Noise filter (Filter > Noise > Add Noise) to add some random white dots. Adjust the settings until it looks like a field of stars. Finally, use the Gaussian Blur (Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur) to give it a more natural look. Voilà, you got yourself a starfield!

Don’t overthink it. Fill a black background, slap on some white noise, and then use a soft eraser to remove excess if it looks too crowded. Easy peasy!
Here’s my quick method: Black background, add some noise, then use Levels (Ctrl+L) to increase contrast. Top it off with a few larger star shapes here and there. Done.
In first hand exp, I get the best results by adding a black background, then applying the Noise filter with a low percentage. I follow it up with a slight Gaussian Blur to soften the stars and use a white brush with varying sizes for adding prominent stars. Works like a charm every time!
