First-hand tip: Just set everything under 'Who can see my stuff?' to 'Friends' or 'Only Me.' It keeps nosy people out!
Go to 'Settings & Privacy' > 'Settings' > 'Privacy', then tweak who can see your stuff. Make sure to limit your posts to 'Friends'.
Making everything private is pointless, seriously, just share less.
From 'Privacy Settings,' make sure to also review things like 'Who can look you up using your email address?'. You'd want that restricted too!
