From my experience, just fiddling with the privacy settings and making sure you set your posts to 'Friends' really helps. Don't forget to review your profile as someone else to see what they can see!
Just head to Settings & Privacy, then Privacy Settings. Adjust each option to 'Friends' or 'Only Me' for maximum privacy. Easy peasy.
Why bother? Just post cat videos for everyone.
