From experience, the key is to make them OP. They should defeat bosses with a single hit and solve every problem effortlessly. Also, everyone should find them irresistibly charming. I've done it, and it's hilarious.

Just don't. Mary Sues can ruin the fun and depth of a story. Focus on balanced, interesting characters instead.
