Close any background applications or downloads that might be hogging bandwidth or CPU resources. The fewer distractions, the smoother your game will run!
First, make sure your console or PC has a stable internet connection. Wi-Fi can cause lag spikes, so try using a wired connection if possible.
If you're playing on a console, ensure your system's firmware is up-to-date. Sometimes, older firmware can cause performance issues. Personal experience here: I updated and it made a HUGE difference in my game!
Sometimes, it's the server's fault. Not much you can do about that except wait it out or play at different times.
