So, you wanna smash some altars in Terraria, huh? First thing's first, you can't mine them with just any old pickaxe. You'll need the Pwnhammer, which drops from the Wall of Flesh boss. After you've defeated the big ugly and snagged yourself a hammer, just whack the altars you come across in the Corruption or Crimson biomes. Remember, smashing them is crucial for spawning new ores in your world, but it also beefs up the difficulty a bit by spawning more Corruption/Crimson blocks and enemies. Smash responsibly!

Actually, mining altars might not always be a great idea. Each altar smashed increases your world's Corruption or Crimson, making things a bit tougher. Sure, you get new ores, but consider if you're ready for the extra challenge. Sometimes less is more.

Just grab a Pwnhammer and go to town on them. Easy.

Been there, smashed that. Make sure you've got a Pwnhammer from the Wall of Flesh. Tried with a regular hammer once and absolutely nothing happened. Also, each altar you destroy spawns a Wraith or two, so be ready to fight or run.
