Use Alt + Left-click to draw out the formation, then you can rotate with Alt + Right-click. Works like a charm!
Honestly, just box select your units, then drag the right mouse button while holding Alt. So simple, I do it all the time!
My tip: select units and press 'G' to group them. Then, move them together with the right mouse button. Keeps 'em in line!
