To pick a team in Splatoon, join Splatfests when they're live. Check the in-game news for announcements and choose your side in the main plaza.
Click the Splatfest terminal in the plaza during an event and choose. That's it!
I've played a ton of Splatoon, and trust me, Splatfests are the way to go. When one starts, just pop over to the Splatfest booth in the plaza and pick your side. Plus, you get cool rewards just for participating!
