Make sure you're not trying to slot it into thin air; that stand is key. You can buy the stand from the Tavernkeep NPC, who shows up after you defeat a certain number of enemies. After setting up the stand in a suitable, spacious area — because trust me, you'll need room for the ensuing battles — simply interact with the stand while having the Eternia Crystal in your inventory, and voila, you're set for the Old One's Army event.
