You can't play offline 2-player in Splatoon 2. Each player needs their own Switch.

Been there, tried that! You can only do local multiplayer if each of you has your own Switch console.

Splatoon 2 doesn't support offline split-screen, but you can enjoy Salmon Run or local multiplayer via LAN Play with two Nintendo Switch consoles connected to the internet.
