Sadly, you can't play the main multiplayer modes with 2 players on the same Wii U. You'll need separate consoles for that.

You can't play the main multiplayer modes on the Wii U with 2 players locally, but you can play the Battle Dojo mode where one player uses the GamePad and the other uses a Wii U Pro controller or a Classic Controller Pro. It's not quite the same as Turf War, but it's still a blast!

I tried this with my sibling! Only the Battle Dojo mode allows local two-player action, with one using the GamePad and the other on a separate controller. It's different from the online modes, but still fun!
