For Co-Op, make sure you're playing State of Decay 2. Go to the pause menu, select 'Multiplayer' and invite your buddy. Happy zombie hunting!

You can't play co-op in the original State of Decay. Upgrade to State of Decay 2 if you want that sweet multiplayer action!
