To play co-op in Tales of Berseria, start by plugging in a second controller. During battle, press the Options button (on PS4) to bring up the character selection screen. Assign player controls to your friend's controller, and you're good to go! Happy adventuring!
From experience, it's best if you make sure your controllers are both connected before starting a battle. Then you just assign the characters using Options. Easy peasy!
