To play solo with a controller without accidentally adding another player, simply start the game with only one controller turned on and connected to your system. If you're on PC, avoid pressing any keys on the keyboard to ensure it doesn't register as a second player trying to join.
Just unplug the other controllers, lol. Helldivers doesn't just randomly spawn players; someone has to press something. So if it's just you, there won't be an issue.
